"Who was that mysterious knight?"

Episode 2 ・ Null Point

Get Ready!

Part 1

Last time on

The Rewriters!

Sol dreamt of a strange world...

Luna

...full of rules and wonder...

Luna

They journeyed on until...

Luna

Sol awoke in an unfamiliar dark cave!

Luna

This seemed to alarm a mysterious knight
who ran off in a hurry.

Luna

Our story continues...

Oof...I'm awake now, right?

Sol

Who was that knight?

Sol

...And where am I?

Sol

You're in Null Point — a faraway cave,
high up in the mountains.

Luna

AH! Luna, where'd you come from?!
I thought you were just part of my dream!

Sol

Normally, yes. I can be here briefly
using my power...

Luna

...but I'll have to leave and rest
for a while after this.

Luna

Really...? But I still don't remember
anything about myself...what will I do
after you leave?

Sol

Don't worry, Sol...I think there's a
solution to your lost memories. Remember the teddy bear you found earlier?

Luna

Oh yeah...I heard a voice when I held
that bear. It seemed familiar.

Sol

Exactly. I believe there are other objects
in this world that will help you unlock
memories of your past.

Luna

...And I'm sensing an object like that at the exit of this cave. Sol, you must find it.

Luna

Woah! Luna, what was the crashing noise
just now?!

Sol

How can this be...?
Sol, the exit is caving in!

Luna

W-what?! What should I do??
We need to get out of here!

Sol

Hmmm...first, let's stay calm.
We still have time, just less than I thought.

Luna

You can do this, Sol — you'll have to escape
the cave by using your rewriting power!

Luna

How can I do that...?

Sol

Look around you...doesn't some of this
seem familiar?

Luna

...Oh, you're right! It looks a little different, but there are objects, blocks, and rules here like the ones in my dream.

Luna

Indeed. I see this cave has objects
like rocks, fungus, fossils, and water.

Luna

Yeah. I also see some object blocks —
there's one for myself, the fungus, the rocks, and the water.

Sol

There's also the connector block...

Luna

And a state block. Hmm, this one says SINK.
I don't think I know that one.

Sol

Can you tell me what it means, Luna?

Sol

Hm...remember Sol, I won't always be here to give you the answer.

Luna

Instead, I can show you how to approach
problems that are new or unfamiliar.
That might be more useful for you.

Luna

After all, the first step to solving
a problem is to understand it.

Luna

And the more you understand a problem,
the more your rewriting power grows
when you WIN.

Luna

Really? Okay then, I'll try...
but where do I start?

Sol

Hmm...let's do this —
try using different object blocks to
rewrite the FUNGUS IS SINK rule.

Luna

Then try to figure out how SINK
affects each object.

Luna

You may not solve the problem right away,
and that's okay. What's important is that you try it and think for yourself first.

Luna

Okay, I'll do my best!

Sol

Stuck? Try this!

  • Undo your last move with the      key
  • Reset the problem from the beginning with
    the      key.

Which object blocks did you use to rewrite FUNGUS IS SINK? How did SINK affect each object?

Discuss with a partner and be ready to share out after 2 minutes.
Let's hear about at least 3 different objects the class tried!

I see you tried several different
things, Sol. Good work.

Luna

But I haven't even solved this problem yet...

Sol

That's fine, Sol. Remember, understanding a problem is the first step.

Luna

Hmm...so what are the other steps to
solving a problem?

Sol

Let's see...here, I wrote them on this
scroll for you. These are the 4 steps I use
to solve a problem.

Luna

Problem-Solving Steps

  1. Understand the problem
  2. Plan a solution
  3. Try the solution
  4. Reflect on the solution

But for now, let's only focus on the
first step — understanding the problem.

Luna

Right. How can I understand blocks and
rules I've never seen before?

Sol

You’ve actually already started doing it...by using a powerful strategy called tinkering.

Luna

Tinkering? What's that?

Sol

Tinkering is like experimenting – you try something new, then pause to notice and understand what happened.

Luna

Try something new...? Like how I tried
writing new rules with the SINK block,
without knowing what would happen?

Sol

Yes, that’s one example of tinkering.
There are many ways we can tinker in
this world.

Luna

For example, right now the FUNGUS IS SINK.
Sol, what could you try in order to learn
more about how that rule works?

Luna

Hmm...my first idea is just to go touch
the fungus and see what happens.

Sol

That’s a great idea. Touching an object to
see what happens is one way to tinker.
Why don’t you try it?

Luna

Okay...I’m kind of scared it’ll be
a mistake though.

Sol

That’s understandable, but remember that mistakes help us learn new things.

Luna

Also, don’t forget you can undo and
start over as many times as you need.

Luna

Oh, that’s right. Alright, here I go...!

Sol

Waaaahh!!

Sol

Okay, let's undo.

Luna

 Are you alright, Sol?

Luna

OMG...that was scary, but also kind of fun?
I didn’t know you could sink in fungus
like that...

Sol

Aha, now this is the important part of
tinkering – after you try something,
pause and think about what happened.

Luna

What did that experiment tell you about
the SINK block?

Luna

Hmm...when I touch an object that’s SINK,
I disappear. But that’s not all...

Sol

The SINK object that I touched
also disappears!

Sol

Good observation. Knowing that, what’s
something new you can try this time?

Luna

I could try pushing these fossils
into the fungus?

Sol

Pushing objects together to see what
happens is another way to tinker.
Go ahead and try it.

Luna

...I see! When I pushed the fossil onto
the fungus, both objects disappeared because FUNGUS IS SINK.

Sol

Indeed. I believe you’re understanding
more about how SINK works.

Luna

Now, here you tried making new rules with
the SINK block, right?

Luna

That’s also a way to tinker – make a new
rule and see how it affects the object.

Luna

Oh, now I understand why you made me do
that! Each object I tried taught me more
about how SINK works...

Sol

When I wrote SOL IS SINK,
nothing happened to me right away...

Sol

But when I stepped on the fungus,
both the fungus and I disappeared again!

Sol

Next, when I wrote ROCK IS SINK,
nothing happened at first...

Sol

I tried walking onto the rocks, but couldn’t because ROCK IS STOP. So I wasn’t able
to make the rocks disappear.

Sol

That must mean an object that’s SINK
disappears only when another object is
on top of it.

Sol

Finally, I made WATER IS SINK.
Nothing happened at first, as usual...

Sol

But when I walked on the water,
both the water and I disappeared.

Sol

At first, I thought I disappeared because
WATER IS DEFEAT. But DEFEAT should only affect
me. It wouldn’t make the water disappear too.

Sol

Now I know we both disappeared because of the WATER IS SINK rule...which gives me an idea!

Sol

This is how I can reach the WIN!
Since WATER IS SINK, I can clear a path
by pushing these fossils into the water!

Sol

Great work explaining your thinking, Sol!
Now, there’s one last step...

Luna

The HEART IS WIN, so I just need to touch it—

Sol

Waaaahhh!!!

Sol

Hehe...no problem, let’s undo.

Luna

Whoops. Well, now I know that even the
WIN object can disappear when it’s SINK!

Sol

Let me try breaking the HEART IS SINK rule
and see what happens.

Sol

You’ve got the hang of this – breaking a
rule and seeing how it affects the object
is another way to tinker.

Luna

Yes, it worked!
I can feel my energy recharging here...

Sol

That was excellent tinkering, Sol.
You were brave and tried different things...

Luna

...touching objects, pushing objects
together, making and breaking rules.

Luna

By tinkering, you learned what SINK
does...all on your own.

Luna

Oh yeah, you’re right...!
Thanks for guiding me through this, Luna.

Sol

Of course. Now, let’s keep moving – we don’t have much time left before the exit caves in.

Luna

You may see 2 more new state blocks as you continue escaping this cave – BOOM and WEAK.

Luna

Hmm...I’ll just tinker to learn how
they work, then!

Sol

I trust that you will, Sol.
Alright, let’s get going!

Luna

Keep Going!

Part 5

Phew, I barely made it out of those
caves in time!

Sol

I’m glad you’re safe, Sol. I know you were scared at first, but you did a great job tinkering to understand each problem.

Luna

Sadly, I have to leave soon...but before
I go, I want to make sure you understand the BOOM and WEAK state blocks.

Luna

...Alright, I'll show you what I learned!

the SPIKES to make this happen?

must be WEAK.

Sol

Which state block would you use on
the SPIKES to make this happen?

Correct. When an object is WEAK, it
disappears if it touches another object.

Luna

Which state block would you use on
the SPIKES to make this happen?

Which state block would you use on
the FOSSILS to make this happen?

Let's think before seeing the poll choices!

All the fossils are disappearing at once, whether they’re on the water or not. So the fossils must be BOOM!

Sol

Which state block would you use on
the FOSSILS to make this happen?

Correct. Making an object BOOM instantly destroys the object, along with any other objects on the same space as it.

Luna

Which state block would you use on
the FOSSILS to make this happen?

You’ve done well, Sol.
Your rewriting power has grown...

Luna

Can you sense it? The object that will
unlock another memory...it’s nearby.

Luna

Hmm...yeah. It’s faint, but I can feel
myself drawn to it.

Sol

...This must be it! I hope this works...
I want to know who I am, or how I got here. Anything, really!

Sol

Carefully taking the diamond, Sol hears a sinister voice...

What will happen when you are no longer
YOU, Sol? Have a good, long sleep to think
about it...

???

Ah! It happened again!
This one had a different voice though...

Sol

And what did they even mean by that?
How can I not be “me”...?

Sol

Well, that’s sort of what’s happening right
now. I don’t know who I am...who is “Sol” supposed to be?

Sol

...Hold on, did someone do this to me on purpose? And if they did...why?

Sol

I still have so many questions...
do you really have to leave, Luna?

Sol

I’m sorry, Sol. But I know you can do
this – discover the truth.

Luna

Travel this world and talk to others along
the way. Practice rewriting and keep growing your power...

Luna

If you do, I believe that you’ll find all
your memories again.

Luna

It looks like I’m out of time here...

Luna

...But we’ll see each other again.
I believe in you, Sol.

Luna

Thank you for everything, Luna...

Sol

Okay...I can do this. I’ll try new
things and see what happens, just like
Luna taught me!

Sol

...And maybe I’ll make some new friends
along the way!

Sol

First things first though, I need to get
down this mountain...hm?

Sol

Are those...footprints in the snow?

Sol

Could they be from the knight
I saw earlier...?

Sol

There's only one way to find out.

Sol

Until next time...
