"An
Unexpected Friend"

Episode 3 ・ Mount Fureeze

Get Ready!

Part 1

Last time on

The Rewriters!

Waking up in the dark caves of
Null Point, Sol tinkered to learn about
new state blocks...

Luna

...and narrowly escaped before
the exit caved in!

Luna

A diamond from the cave unlocked a new
memory, which suggested that someone may have trapped Sol there on purpose...

Luna

Starting out on their journey for answers,
Sol follows a set of footprints left in
the snow...

Luna

Our story continues...

Hm...it looks like the footprints
disappear up ahead.

Sol

I don't see anyone around though...

Sol

Hm? What's this fluffy thing
stuck in the snow?

Sol

WOAH!

Sol

EEK! A human?? W-who are you??

???

My name’s Sol, but I don’t know much more
than that...what’s your name?

Sol

M-my name's Zorro...I'm an arctic fox.

Zorro

Zorro, huh? That name doesn’t ring a bell, but...Zorro, have you ever seen me before?

Sol

Huh? N-no!! I haven’t seen anyone else
here in Mount Fureeze in ages...

Zorro

With all these problems popping up everywhere, it’s hard to travel from place to place...

Zorro

...So how did you even get here, Sol?

Zorro

Well, I came from those caves up the mountain...I saw a lot of problems
over there, too.

Sol

I almost got stuck in there, but I
managed to solve the problems and escape
by rewriting the rules.

Sol

You...what?! You’re a REWRITER?!?!
I thought there were none left...!

Zorro

Hm? Y-yeah, I’m definitely a
Rewriter...is that weird?

Sol

No, no, not at all! It’s just...rare.
Most aren’t Rewriters, like me...

Zorro

I can read the rules, but I can’t change anything. That’s why I’ve been stuck here
for a while...

Zorro

You’re stuck? Where are you trying to go?

Sol

Well...I really want to go back to my home
at the bottom of the mountain, but I’m blocked by all the objects around here.

Zorro

...Since I can’t rewrite, there’s
nothing I can do.

Zorro

Are you sure...? There must be something we
can do to get you out of here. Something you haven’t tried yet.

Sol

I don't think so...well, you can take a
look if you want — over here.

Zorro

See, look — there's snow, lava,
and rocks everywhere.

Zorro

I see...but there’s also object blocks
for LAVA and ROCKS down here...I might be
able to use those.

Sol

I'm not sure what these two state blocks
do though — HOT and MELT.

Sol

Um, all I know about HOT and MELT is that
they work as a pair somehow...sorry I can’t
be more helpful...

Zorro

Maybe one destroys the other?
I'm not sure which does which though...

Zorro

Hmm...Zorro, you helped me understand the problem a bit more. Which gives me an idea!

Sol

I can tinker with the HOT and MELT blocks
by using them to make rules for the lava
and the rocks.

Sol

Once we understand how these blocks work,
we can use them to escape this problem and
get you home!

Sol

R-really? There might be more problems
after this one though...can we really do it?

Zorro

It might be difficult, but...better to try
it than stay here for your whole life, right?

Sol

...You have a point. Alright, I’ll watch you
and try to help if I can.

Zorro

Explore!

Part 2

(4 min.)

Play!

In problem 1, tinker with HOT and MELT to understand how they affect each other.

  • Between the lava and rocks, which object did you make HOT?
  • Which object did you make MELT?
  • What happened and why?

Be ready to discuss after time is up!

Part 3

Pair Share!
Between the lava and rocks, which object did you make HOT?
Which object did you make MELT? What happened and why?

Discuss with a partner and be ready to share out after 2 minutes.
Let's hear from 2 students who tried different options.

Hm...I think I have a good idea of
how HOT and MELT work now.

Sol

Zorro, you’re correct that they work as
a pair. When I only wrote LAVA IS HOT,
nothing happened.

Sol

But after I wrote ROCK IS MELT,
all rocks on the lava disappeared!

Sol

I see...what if you only made an object MELT? Does that do anything on its own?

Zorro

Nope, I tried that – I reset and only wrote
LAVA IS MELT. Again, nothing happened yet.

Sol

But after I wrote ROCK IS HOT, all the
lava underneath the rocks disappeared!

Sol

After seeing it both ways, I’m sure that
HOT objects destroy MELT objects – but only
when they’re on the same space.

Sol

I see that too...and it looks like
the HOT objects don’t get destroyed when
that happens.

Zorro

Yeah, good point. Now that we know more
about HOT and MELT, let’s restart the problem and look at it again.

Sol

By the way, Zorro...are you sure you
haven’t done this before?

Sol

M-me? Um, well...even though I can’t
rewrite, sometimes I talk about the problems around me with my friend Piney...

Zorro

Oh, really? Is Piney around here somewhere?

Sol

Yeah...right here...

Zorro

>

...A pinecone?

Sol

It’s silly, I know...but talking through problems with Piney helps me understand them
a bit more.

Zorro

...I don’t think it’s silly at all.
Nice to meet you, Piney!

Sol

...

Piney

Hey...I think Piney likes you!

Zorro

I think we’ll get along great! Zorro and
Piney, the two of you just reminded me...

Sol

Someone told me recently that understanding a problem is the first step to solving it.

Sol

Problem-Solving Steps

  1. Understand the problem
  2. Plan a solution
  3. Try the solution
  4. Reflect on the solution

I kind of get how to do it, but...you two
seem like you’ve practiced it more. What do
you usually talk about?

Sol

Oh! Well, I worry a lot, so I ask Piney the questions that are bothering me the most.

Zorro

Like, usually my first thought is,
“What am I even trying to do here?”

Zorro

Hmm...that sounds like a useful question.
But maybe another way to ask it is:
“What is the goal?”

Sol

Oh...I like that. Piney, what do you think
the goal of this problem is?

Zorro

...

Piney

...Piney says the goal is to reach the
heart since HEART IS WIN.

Zorro

I agree, Piney – if we reach the WIN
object, we can continue down the mountain.
What’s the next question you usually ask?

Sol

Hmm, usually I look around and think,
“What are all these things in my way?”

Zorro

That seems important to know! How about
we ask Piney like this instead:
“What’s blocking me from the goal?”

Sol

...That sounds good. Piney, what do you
think is blocking us from the heart?

Zorro

...

Piney

...I think— I mean, Piney thinks that the
rocks are blocking us because of the rule
ROCK IS DEFEAT.

Zorro

Oh yeah. I thought the lava might be
blocking us too, but there are no rules for
it – we can walk on it just fine!

Sol

There’s one more question I ask Piney a lot: “What else is here...and what can I even do?”

Zorro

You can do a lot, Zorro! Let’s change that question to be: “What else is in this problem and what choices do we have?

Sol

Choices? Well, we can choose to make the lava either HOT or MELT – same with the rocks.

Zorro

And we already tried it both ways!
Since the rocks are blocking us, let’s
make ROCK IS MELT...

Sol

And LAVA IS HOT!

Zorro

Alright! Since we’re not MELT,
we can cross the HOT lava safely.

Sol

Zorro, asking those questions really helped
me understand the problem. I’ll write them on
my scroll so I don’t forget...

Sol

Problem-Solving Steps

  1. Understand the problem
  • What is the goal?
  • What is blocking me from the goal?
  • What else is in this problem and what choices do I have?

2. Plan a Solution

I’m glad I could help...but now there’s
even more things in our way!

Zorro

Hmm...let’s go back to our questions.
We know our goal is still the heart...

Sol

But what’s blocking us from the goal now?
I think we can figure it out if we read the rules around here.

Sol

What is blocking us from the goal?

Let's think before seeing the poll choices!

What is blocking us from the goal?

...Piney is saying only the snowbunny
is blocking us because of the rule
SNOWBUNNY IS DEFEAT.

Zorro

The other objects in this path shouldn’t be
an issue...I guess there’s not as many things blocking us as I thought!

Zorro

On that note, let’s make sure we understand
the rest of the problem: what else is here,
and what choices do we have?

Sol

What else is in this problem?
...There’s a lot of things!
It’s a little overwhelming.

Zorro

True...let's look at objects first,
then rules, then blocks.

Sol

Okay...the other objects in this path are a spike, a snowball, fire, ice, and a fossil.

Zorro

Next, there’s some other rules we can’t
reach, like SNOW IS STOP and FIRE IS HOT.

Sol

Finally, there’s some blocks you could use
to make rules at the top and bottom...

Zorro

You could make one of these three objects
PUSH by using its object block:
SPIKE, SNOWBALL, or FIRE.

Zorro

Down here, I can make one of these objects
MELT by using its object block:
ICE, SNOWBUNNY, or FOSSIL.

Sol

So, that’s what we have here. We have choices for two important things – which object to
make PUSH, and which object to make MELT.

Sol

Which object should be PUSH and
which object should be MELT? Why?

Let's Discuss:

...Piney thinks — actually, I think that you should make the rules FIRE IS PUSH and  SNOWBUNNY IS MELT.

Zorro

I agree with you, Zorro! Since the snowbunny
is blocking us, we have to destroy it somehow.

Sol

We know from earlier that HOT objects can destroy MELT objects...and we already have
the rule FIRE IS HOT.

Sol

So if we make SNOWBUNNY IS MELT...

Zorro

Then FIRE IS PUSH...

Sol

You can push the HOT fire on top of the
MELT snowbunny to destroy it!

Zorro

And now all that’s left is to touch the heart!

Sol

Wow...you really did it, Sol!
So this is the power of a Rewriter...!

Zorro

What do you mean, Zorro?
We did it together – you, me, and Piney!

Sol

H-huh?? Oh yeah...I guess you’re right!

Zorro

Now we can keep going down the mountain –
let’s get you home!

Sol

Keep Going!

Part 5

Whew, that was a lot of problems we went
through – but we finally made it!

Sol

Yes!! Piney, we’re back home,
safe and sound!!

Zorro

Thank you so much, Sol...not only did
you help me get home, you taught me a
lot about rewriting!

Zorro

I thought I’d be stuck in those
difficult problems forever, and there
was nothing I could do...

Zorro

But now I see that problems aren’t so scary
once I take time to try and understand them.

Zorro

I’m glad, Zorro! To be honest, I was a
little scared of going down this mountain
on my own...

Sol

So hearing you ask questions and talk
out loud...it helped me stay calm and think these problems through.

Sol

Thank you, Zorro. And you, Piney!

Sol

Describe a time a friend helped you learn something.

Let's Discuss:

As they worked together to get down the mountain, Sol taught Zorro how to have courage and try things, while Zorro taught Sol how to better understand a problem.

Alright Zorro! I know you’ve missed your
home, so...I’ll get going, then...

Sol

W-wait, Sol!

Zorro

It’s true, all I wanted at
first was to go home...

Zorro

But...I had so much fun solving problems
with you! And now that I’ve seen how
rewriting works, I want to learn more!

Zorro

So...can I, uh, join you? Maybe I can help
you find more of your lost memories!

Zorro

Zorro...of course you can!
I’ll feel a lot better traveling with you!

Sol

Yay, I’m so excited!! As a thank you...

Zorro

Here, you can carry Piney!

Zorro

Really? Are you sure??

Sol

Yep! Piney’s always helped me,
so...maybe it can help you too!

Zorro

Plus, we’re friends now, right?
And friends share things!

Zorro

Yeah, we are! Thank you, Zorro.
I'll treasure Piney!

Sol

...

Piney

Hm? I feel a strange power
coming from Piney...

Sol (Thinking)

Staring into Piney’s eyes, Sol hears a kind voice...

Here you go, Sol! ...I know, this is my
favorite toy, but...I want you to have it. I have the most fun with you, after all!

???

Woah! Another memory! I didn’t recognize
this voice, either...

Sol

Are you okay, Sol?? What did you remember?

Zorro

Yeah, I’m fine. It seems like I had another friend back then who used to share things
with me...

Sol

Oh, that’s great!
Maybe we can find them later!

Zorro

Yeah...! Maybe once we’re off the mountain—

Sol

.....help.....

???

Uh...did you say something, Zorro?

Sol

...help...me...

???

EEK! That wasn’t me...I think it’s
coming from those ruins over there!

Zorro

What?? Let’s hurry there, then!
Someone could be in danger!

Sol

Right! Follow me, Sol!

Zorro

Until next time...
