"A Knight at
the Beach"

Episode 6 ・ Crabby Sands

Last time on

The Rewriters!

After Sol was accidentally separated from
the rest of the group, Morel and Zorro met Olive, an ambitious fish!

Luna

The team learned to plan solutions using sequencing – with this new strategy, Morel, Enoki, and Olive became Rewriters and reunited with Sol!

Luna

Back together, Olive shared rumors she’s
heard about “the Keepers” – the group behind
the disappearance of rewriting...

Luna

Among the Keepers is one powerful Rewriter –
a human in a knight’s mask. Hearing this, the team sets out to find the knight using Olive’s shell...

Luna

But on touching the shell, Sol unlocked a
memory – someone upset with them for acting without thinking.

Luna

Who was that voice? Will Sol find out more
as the team sets out on their search for the mysterious knight...?

Luna

Our story continues...

Get Ready!

Part 1

Here we are, the beautiful beach of
Crabby Sands! Sol, what direction is the
shell pointing right now?

Olive

This way! Can this shell really lead
us straight to that knight?

Sol

Not exactly – it will lead us in the right direction, but we’ll have to do a bit more investigating from there.

Olive

Alright, let’s keep moving then!

Sol

Look, the shell is just slowly

spinning around now...!

Sol

Aha, the knight must be close by!

Olive

But how can we get closer to finding them now?

Zorro

Hmm...perhaps we can ask someone around
here if they’ve seen anything?

Morel

Great idea Morel! Here I go~

Olive

Excuse me, have you seen a knight pass
through lately? About this tall, has a mysterious energy?

Olive

I see, I see...That’s helpful, thank you!

Olive

They were seen going this way just
a few moments ago! Let’s hurry!

Olive

I see a figure up ahead! Is that...?!

Zorro

The knight?!

Sol

Oh my frog! The knight just turned into that...shrub?? This must be the rumored transformation power!

Olive

They both ran off! Let’s go follow them!!

Olive

Hold on, Olive – which way shall we go?
When they shuffled, I lost track of who
was who...

Morel

...Oh, I have an idea! Let’s split up into
pairs and check both ways at once!

Zorro

Great idea! Zorro, you and Morel take the
left path. Olive and I will go right.

Sol

Sounds like a plan.

Morel

That’s all good with me! Ready?

Olive

Break!

Sol

Let's go, Olive!

Sol

Olive, look over there – a small trail of leaves! I bet that will lead us to the shrub!

Sol

...Olive?

Sol

Wow, look at this beautiful starfish! Ahh,
it’s been so long since I’ve been on land~

Olive

Umm, we should probably get going...

Sol

...Hm? Oh yes, the leaves!
Let’s follow them, Sol!

Olive

...Right!

Sol

She seems a bit distracted...are the
two of us going to be okay?

Sol (Thinking)

Hmm, the leaves stop here – looks like
we’ll have to solve this to continue.

Sol

Okay, let’s begin! I know that our goal is
to reach the heart since HEART IS WIN!

Olive

Right. And it seems like we’re blocked by
the sandcastle, which is STOP AND SHUT...

Sol

Oooh, we’re also blocked by the starfish!
I wish I could take them, but they’re DEFEAT
AND MELT...

Sol

...Yeah.

Sol

As far as what else is here, there’s
an urchin, a beach ball, and a bubble.

Sol

There’s also object blocks for those
3 objects, and an IS block.

Sol

But there are no state blocks for us to use!

Olive

I’m not sure I understand this problem yet, but...we can definitely work this out!

Olive

Hmm...maybe if we read the rest of the
rules, we can figure out how to use each of these different objects.

Sol

...But do we really have all the objects
we need to reach the goal?

Sol

If we don’t, we can just get more objects somehow! Come on Sol, let’s start!

Olive

Okay, okay...let’s do this.

Part 3

Why are each of these objects useful or not useful for solving this problem?
Which object do you need more of, and how can you get more of it?

Pair Share!

Discuss with a partner and be ready to share out after 2 minutes. Let’s hear from at least 3 students!

Let’s start with what these 3 objects have
in common – we can push all of them since
URCHIN AND BALL AND BUBBLE IS PUSH.

Sol

PUSH isn’t useful on its own, though – we
need objects with rules that can help us get past the sandcastles or starfish.

Sol

Ooh, I know! For the urchin, there’s one
more rule for it: URCHIN IS HOT.

Olive

Since HOT objects can destroy MELT objects,
we can use the urchin to destroy the starfish!

Olive

Yep, so the urchin will be useful. Next, the ball also has another rule: BALL IS OPEN.

Sol

OPEN objects and SHUT objects disappear
when they touch, so we can use the ball to
get past the sandcastle!

Sol

Great! As for the bubble...there’s no other rules for it. It’s only PUSH.

Olive

So the bubble isn’t really useful to us
here – we just need the beach ball and
the urchin!

Olive

I agree – now that we’ve looked at
everything in this problem, let’s start
planning a solution.

Sol

Problem-Solving Steps

  • What steps should I take to get closer to the goal?
  • What order should I do these steps in?

 2. Plan a solution

We can get closer to the goal if we use the beach ball to destroy the sandcastles, and
the urchin to destroy the starfish!

Olive

True...I see an issue, though. The urchin
can destroy both starfish, but we’d need 2
beach balls to destroy both sandcastles.

Sol

If only we had another beach ball instead of
a bubble, that plan would be perfect...

Sol

Wait...that’s just it, Sol!
We’re Rewriters, so we should be able to do
what the knight did earlier, right?

Olive

...OH! You mean when they transformed
into a shrub?

Sol

Yes! If we connect 2 object blocks with the
IS block, perhaps we can transform an object into another object!

Olive

Why didn’t I think of that?? Let’s try it!

Sol

We need this bubble to become a ball,
so we should write the rule...

Sol

BALL IS BUBBLE!

Olive

Uhh wait, Olive...I think it’s actually—

Sol

Oh, whoops!!
Looks like it was the other way around!

Olive

Hmph...
that’s what I was trying to tell you...

Sol

Well, now we know how transformation
works – the first object transforms into
the second object!

Olive

That’s true...could you just slow down a bit?

Sol

Like I was saying –

Sol

We want the bubbles
to transform into balls so...

Sol

...let's write BUBBLE IS BALL.

Sol

It worked, the bubbles are gone! Amazing~

Olive

Since they’re both beach balls now, they
should both have the rule BALL IS OPEN.
Let’s try it out...

Sol

Since they’re both beach balls now, they
should both have the rule BALL IS OPEN.
Let’s try it out...

Sol

Yes! Now we just need to...

Sol

Destroy the starfish with the urchin!

Olive

And we’ve reached the WIN object! Bravo!

Olive

Transformation is incredible! We can turn
any object into a different object, as long
as we have the blocks for it!

Olive

Yeah, it’s definitely powerful.
But Olive...let’s try to pause and plan
things before doing them, okay?

Sol

Of course, I understand!

Olive

Does she really?

Sol (Thinking)

Look Sol, there’s a mini problem here!

Olive

Hmm, we just need to get past
this water somehow since it’s DEFEAT...

Sol

Looks like we only have object blocks,
an IS block, and this starfish...

Olive

But there are no rules for the
starfish — so we must need to transform
it into something else!

Olive

Hm...let’s transform it into a sandcastle
first since SANDCASTLE IS PUSH.

Sol

Or...we could transform it into the
bubble first since BUBBLE IS BOOM!
That could destroy the water!

Olive

Are you sure?
Let’s think about it for a second...

Sol

Which transformation should
Sol and Olive write first?

Let's think before seeing the poll choices!

The starfish isn’t on the water,
so if we make it a bubble first...
it’ll just explode right here.

Sol

...it’ll just explode right here.

Sol

Ooh, you are correct, Sol!
Let’s reset and transform the starfish
into a sandcastle then!

Sol

Now we can push it onto the water...

Sol

And now we can transform it into a bubble
by writing STARFISH IS BUBBLE!

Sol

Yeah! Wait, no...shouldn’t it be
SANDCASTLE IS BUBBLE?

Olive

Uhhh, let me think again...

...Oh wait, you’re right. The starfish
isn’t here anymore – it’s a sandcastle now.

Sol

Yes, so if we write
SANDCASTLE IS BUBBLE...

Olive

BOOM! And ta-da~

Olive

Sorry...I was wrong that time.

Sol

Hm? Sol, that’s nothing you need to apologize for! I’ve been wrong today lots of times!

Olive

If anything, I should apologize to you –
I know I should pause and plan more, like
you said. Sorry about that...

Olive

I suppose this is why we’re working together, after all – to help each other learn!

Olive

Now, let’s keep looking for that shrub...
oh look, another starfish over there!
I simply must have it!

Olive

...Aaaand she’s off again.

Sol

She’s right, though...we all make mistakes, that’s how we learn. I know that, so why am
I still so frustrated?

Sol

Maybe if I was as confident as Olive, I...

Sol

...No, nevermind. I’d better go after her.

Sol

Olive, wait up!!

Part 5

Look, Sol! The trail of leaves we’ve
been following stops here and turns
into footprints!

Olive

You’re right! They look new, too –
we must be close to the knight!

Sol

I’ll go get Zorro and Morel – be right back!

Olive

Thanks! While you do that, I’ll finish
up this last problem...

All the objects turned into bubbles! After the first rule, I had 3 starfish. After the second rule, all 3 starfish transformed into bubbles.

Sol

I see the knight up ahead...!

Sol

I see the knight up ahead...!

And here I am with the rest of the team,
just in time!

Olive

Finally...we caught up to you...!

Sol

...Ack! Ahem, I mean...

Knight

You think you’ve caught me?
We’ll see about that, Sol. As well as Olive. Zorro. Morel and Enoki.

Knight

Zorro

You...know our names?

Of course. The Keepers see everything – and
your group has committed a serious breach of
the rules.

Knight

The rules were written this way for a
reason – to keep order. Change is unpredictable, and leads to downfall.

Knight

That’s why rewriting had to be banished.

Knight

How can you believe all that...?
Aren’t you a Rewriter?

Sol

Haven’t you felt the satisfaction of walking through walls, or breaking down obstacles?

Sol

Or the fun of transforming objects?
Or even just...the fun of working with your friends to solve problems?

Sol

...I have no need for such distractions.
And no room for failure.

Knight

I don’t know your situation, but...
it’s okay to fail. I’ve failed a lot during
my journey so far...

Sol

But that’s how I got here! If I was too
afraid to fail, I’d probably still be stuck
in that cave.

Sol

...Of course, I have my friends to thank
for helping me get this far, too.

Sol

...Hah. The Keepers would see your ‘friends’
as a weakness.

Knight

What do you mean...? If that’s the case,
why are you even working for the Keepers?

Sol

...Why don’t you join us, instead?

Sol

...After all this, you’re still Sol, aren’t you?

Knight

Making friends wherever you go. Never giving up, even when the odds are stacked against you...

Knight

But I'm not you.

Knight

Wait...did you know me from before...?
What’s your name?

Sol

...I suppose you wouldn’t remember after
what we did to you. It’s Menti.

Menti

Now if we’re done here, I’ll be going.
The Keepers await my updated report.

Menti

Sol...enjoy your journey while you still can.

Menti

Wait, Menti!

Sol

...They’re gone, again.

Sol

Sol...remember, we’re here for you!

Zorro

Indeed...if you want to go after
Menti again, we’ll gladly join you.

Morel

Hmm...I think I want to?
But...can I really change Menti’s mind?

Sol

Sol...we can do this!

Olive

Actually, I have something for all of you...
this may not be the best timing, but...

Olive

Here, I made one of these for each of us Rewriters...it’s a friendship charm!

Olive

Wow, when did you even make these??
Thanks, Olive!

Zorro

Yes, thank you!

Morel

It seems Enoki is already fond of it.

Morel

...Is this is what you were collecting
starfish for, Olive?

Sol

Sure is!

Olive

Olive...I’m sorry! This whole time I was
getting frustrated with you because I thought
you were distracted...

Sol

Sol

But really, that was never it.
To be honest...I think I was just a little
jealous of you.

Sol

You’re so confident, and you face problems
head on...meanwhile, I’m still not sure who
I am, or who I was.

Olive

Hmm...it’s true that I’m quick on my feet,
and love being the center of attention...

Olive

But you, Sol?  You’re kind, and you never give
up, even when you’re scared. You’re the one
who brings us together.

Olive

We might not be exactly the same, but...that difference is what makes us such a great team!

Olive

So please, Sol...accept this gift
and be proud of who you are!

Sol

Olive...thank you.
For this, and for everything.

Accepting the friendship charm from Olive, Sol hears a familiar voice...

???

Are you ok, Sol? ...No, I was at fault too...
I’m sorry. Look, no matter what happens...
we’ll always be friends.

Sol (Thinking)

That voice...! It was the same as the
last memory I heard!

Sol (Thinking)

So whoever I was arguing with before...
we must have made up somehow.

Sol (Thinking)

Haha...I guess I’ve always relied on
my friends, huh?

Zorro

Sol? Did you remember something
funny this time?

Sol

It’s not that, it’s just...I’m glad we all met.

Sol

Everyone...I’ve made up my mind. Let’s settle things with Menti, once and for all.

Zorro

Hm? I’m not sure what you remembered,
but...okay! Let’s show Menti the real power
of rewriting!

Zorro

Yes...all of us together have made it
this far. We can overcome whatever problems
the Keepers have for us.

Olive

We’re with you, Sol – we’ll show Menti and
the Keepers that change isn’t as scary as
they think it is.

Olive

And just in case Menti decides to join us...
I’ve got an extra charm right here!

Sol

Thanks, everyone. Now, for the last time –
let’s follow that knight!

Until next time...
