"Finders, Keepers"

Episode 8 ・ Far Far Fields

Last time on

The Rewriters!

Having followed Menti into the sunny town
of Willowbrook, Sol and friends challenged
the knight to a rewriting duel!

Luna

Thanks to their teamwork, the Rewriters
won easily against the lone knight.

Luna

Going to pick up Menti’s toy horse,
Sol had a big realization...

Luna

The childhood friend that Sol had been
hearing in their memories...that was
Menti all along!

Luna

Luna

Unmasking, Menti confessed that she followed the Keepers with the hope of protecting them both from the risks of change – something she now regrets.

Luna

With Sol’s encouragement, Menti found the courage
to fix her mistake, joining the team in their
quest to bring rewriting back to this world!

The Rewriters continue on their journey...
but someone is already waiting for them...

Luna

Our story continues...

Get Ready!

Part 1

Alright, everyone. If we’re going to
take down the Keepers, we’ll need to travel
to their headquarters.

Menti

Menti

Luckily, we can get there using
the station, but...

Sol

But what?

Well, we have to cross Far Far Fields
first. That’s her territory.

Menti

"Her"...?

Sol

Headkeeper Lopi...she’s one of
the two leaders of the Keepers.

Menti

If possible, I want to
avoid running into her...

Menti

It’s too late for that, Menti.

???

L-Lopi?!

Menti

???

Sigh...first the weeds in my garden,
now this? Things are getting out of control...and I won’t have it.

Menti, I heard from my shrubs –
you’ve gone and switched sides, have you?

Lopi

I...yes, I have.

Menti

...Unbelievable. This is the thanks I get?

Lopi

Excuse me, Lopi...Menti’s just doing
what she thinks is right. And she can
decide that for herself, can’t she?

Sol

Ah...Sol, it’s been a while, hasn’t it?
I hardly recognized you there.

Lopi

...What do you mean by that?
Do you know something about me?

Sol

More than you know.
Come here and I’ll show you, Sol.

Lopi

W-wait, Sol...!

Menti

That dandelion you’re holding...?!
I know this feeling...

Sol

Reaching for the dandelion, Sol hears an arrogant voice...

How silly of you...playing around
with dangerous blocks.

Lopi (Memory)

But don’t worry – the Keepers will
keep you safe, forever. Doesn’t that
sound nice? Sol, Menti?

Lopi (Memory)

Th-that was...?!

Sol

I...I remember now. Menti...
this is all my fault, isn’t it?

Sol

Sol, no...!

Menti

W-what do you mean, Sol?
What did you remember?

Zorro

It happened here, years ago...
I dragged Menti along for another one
of our rewriting adventures...

Sol

But as I rushed into in one of the
problems, I made a huge mistake.

Sol

I broke the SOL IS YOU rule...
and I was no longer in control of myself.

Sol

...Yeah. I tried fixing things,
but I didn’t understand what happened.

Menti

I felt like I was just making it
worse by trying...and I got so scared,
I just...stopped.

Menti

And that’s how I found you two – stuck,
and scared. Honestly, you were lucky the
Keepers knew how to handle it.

Lopi

After that, both of you stopped
rewriting – and who can blame you? You
saw yourself how dangerous it can be!

Lopi

So the reason we stopped rewriting...
the reason Menti joined the Keepers...
it was because of me. My mistake.

Sol

And then I just...gave up? Is that the kind
of person I was...? Is that who I am?

Sol

No! That’s not true, Sol...!

Menti

But it is. And now that you’ve remembered
the truth of your past, Sol...

Lopi

Perhaps you might rethink going
against us? Oh, maybe your whole
team can join us instead!

Lopi

...

Sol

Why don’t you think on it? I’ll be waiting
for your answer outside the station...

Lopi

Sol, no! Don’t let her get to you...
you’re the one who told me we learn and
grow from mistakes, right?

Menti

Yeah...but now that I remember how scared
I felt at that time, I...I don’t know.

Sol

Sol...you’re the reason I’m here,
as a Rewriter! You’ve helped me this whole
time, so...I won’t let you give up!

Zorro

I feel the same...Sol, you can rely on
us a bit more. Enoki and I are here for you,
as you were for us.

Morel

You’ve seen how many mistakes I make,
Sol...and I’ve learned so much because of you! So let’s keep rewriting together, okay?

Olive

Look, Sol...I know you’re scared, but I
want you to remember how much fun we had rewriting together, too!

Menti

So before we go meet Lopi...let’s solve
some problems together. They may be difficult...but I know we can do it.

Menti

If, after this, you want to quit or join
the Keepers...well, I won’t like it. But I
won’t stop you.

Menti

Everyone...I’m sorry.
I just need some time to think.

Sol

But you’re all my friends, so...
if you want to keep going, I’ll at least
come with you for now.

Sol

Okay, we can do this...!
Come on everyone, let’s head this way...

Menti

Here, let’s try solving this one first...
should I start?

Menti

Wait...do you see that block that says NOT?
It looks like a connector block, but I’ve
never seen it before...

Zorro

Hmm, I heard the Keepers started using
a powerful new block – this must be it.
I’m not sure how it works, though.

Menti

Oh no...another new block?
What if I mess up, like before...?

Sol (Thinking)

Maybe I’ll just let my friends handle
this...I’d probably just get in the way...

Sol (Thinking)

Let’s see here...there’s a rule on
the left that says GRASS IS NOT BOOM...

Morel

...I wonder what will happen when we write
GRASS IS BOOM?

Morel

Ooh, I have a guess! But before we
write it, let’s all predict what will
happen – okay, Sol?

Olive

U-um...yeah, sure.

Sol

Sounds good – then we can try it and see
if our predictions were correct or not.

Menti

And once we understand what NOT does,
maybe we can use it in our solution.

Menti

Let’s do it!

Olive

Was your prediction correct?
Why or why not?

Part 3

Make a prediction for what will happen when you write GRASS IS BOOM.
Was your prediction correct? Why or why not?

Pair Share!

Discuss with a partner and be ready to share out after 2 minutes. Let’s hear from at least 3 students!

I predicted the grass would explode –
that’s what usually happens when we make
an object BOOM...

Sol

But I was wrong...again.
Maybe Lopi is right about me...

Sol

Sol, it’s okay to be wrong! We still
learned from our little experiment, right?

Olive

I agree with Olive! It turns out nothing happened when we wrote GRASS IS BOOM...

Menti

The rule even got crossed out!
I wasn’t expecting that.

Menti

So basically, GRASS IS BOOM got canceled
out because of the rule GRASS IS NOT BOOM?

Zorro

Yes, that must be the power of the NOT block...it can be used to cancel out another rule, as we just saw here.

Morel

Yeah. Looks like we can cancel out a rule
by writing the same rule again but with NOT after the IS block.

Menti

So now that we know what NOT does,
let’s look at the rest of this problem...

Menti

...you all use a scroll to help you, right?

Menti

Oh yeah...here, you can look at it.

Sol

Problem-Solving Steps

  1. Understand the problem
  2. Plan a solution
  3. Try the solution
  4. Reflect on the solution

Got it. So the first step is understanding
the problem...looks like you wrote down some questions to help you do that.

Menti

Problem-Solving Steps

  1. Understand the problem
  • What is the goal?
  • What is blocking me from the goal?
  • What else is in this problem and what choices do I have?

First, the goal is to reach the heart
because HEART IS WIN!

Zorro

As for what else is in this problem,
there’s a frog and an object block for it
right here...anything else, Sol?

Olive

...Yeah. There’s a rule that says
FROG IS PUSH in the center...

Sol

And some incomplete rules at the top and bottom...we could probably write a few
different rules with those.

Menti

Indeed, we’ll need to figure out how to use those blocks. Perhaps we should move onto the next step: planning a solution.

Morel

Problem-Solving Steps

2. Plan a solution

  • What steps should I take to get closer to the goal?
  • What order should I do these steps in?

Hmm...first, we’ll need to get past this
water on the left. Since it’s SINK, we could push two objects in to clear a path.

Zorro

We have a frog we can push in,
but that’s only one object...

Zorro

I have an idea – we can also push the
FROG object block into the water to clear
the next space!

Menti

Wait, you can do that??

Zorro

Yep, blocks can also be used to destroy
objects that are SINK – just make sure you
don’t need that block for a rule later!

Menti

Hm, I haven’t thought about using blocks
that way...interesting.

Sol (Thinking)

Very good. Now that we’ve planned how to get past the water on the left, let’s think about the water on the right.

Morel

Hmm...do you have any ideas for that, Sol?

Menti

Well...maybe one idea. I don’t know if
it’s right though...

Sol

Let’s hear it, Sol – even if it’s wrong,
we’ll learn something from it, after all!

Olive

Okay...at the bottom, we could push the
SAFE block down so that I become SAFE – then
I could cross the water, right?

Sol

Oh, good idea! If you’re SAFE,
you won’t SINK in the water – then you
can reach the heart!

Zorro

Sounds like we have our plan –
let’s try it now! That’s my favorite part~

Olive

Right. Follow me, everyone –
first I’ll push the frog and the object
block into the water...

Menti

Wow, it worked!

Olive

Next, I’ll push the SAFE block
down so SOL becomes SAFE...

Menti

Waaaahhh!!! What happened?!

Sol (Frog)

I made another mistake, didn’t I...
oh no, this is just like that memory!!

Sol (Frog)

Sol, everything’s okay!!
We know better now...we can just undo!

Menti

Sol, everything’s okay!!
We know better now...we can just undo!

Menti

See? All good!

Menti

I...that was...

Sol

Sol? Are you alright??

Zorro

Ha...hahaha! That was a new one –
transforming into a frog!! Haha!

Sol

Whew, okay...that was a shock, but I think
it helped clear my mind a bit. Let’s try
again – we definitely need a new plan!

Sol

Heh, you’re right about that.
Let’s reflect on this plan so we can figure
out how to improve it.

Menti

Problem-Solving Steps

 3. Try the solution

 4. Reflect on the solution

  • What happened and why didn’t our plan work?
  • How could we revise our plan?

The plan didn’t work since Sol turned
into a frog...but we should figure out why
that happened.

Morel

Why did Sol turn into a frog?

Let's Discuss:

Ah, I see – we missed some things in understanding this problem. When I pushed
the SAFE block down...

Menti

It didn’t just make SOL IS SAFE.
It made SOL IS SAFE AND FROG.

Menti

Hmm...I see. That’s the same as writing
SOL IS SAFE and SOL IS FROG — the second part
of the rule is why I transformed.

Sol

Oh, that makes sense! Now that we understand
our mistake, let’s revise our plan – is there anything else we missed?

Zorro

How about the incomplete rule at the top?
We noticed it, but didn’t use it at all.

Olive

Let’s see...it says SOL IS NOT...

Sol

Oh! That gives me an idea for a new plan!

Sol

Before writing SOL IS SAFE AND FROG,
we can write the rule SOL IS NOT FROG!

Sol

...Oh yeah! We know the NOT block can
be used to cancel out rules...

Menti

That means SOL IS NOT FROG would cancel
out SOL IS FROG – but it wouldn’t affect
SOL IS SAFE!

Menti

...Wait a second – we’ll need to clear a path through the water here to write that rule.

Zorro

We could do what Menti showed us earlier –
use a block to SINK the water!

Olive

True! Let’s just make sure we don’t
SINK a block we actually need...

Menti

Which block should not be pushed into the water?

Poll Time!

Let's think before seeing the poll choices!

Which block should not be pushed into the water?

Poll Open!

1

FROG

2

IS

3

PUSH

Completed!

Which block should not be pushed into the water?

1

FROG

2

IS

3

PUSH

Poll Closed!

We shouldn’t push the FROG block into the
water, because we need it to complete the
rule at the top.

Morel

Let’s use the PUSH block to destroy the
water, then – we don’t need that one anymore.

Sol

Sounds like we have our revised plan,
then...are you ready to try it, Sol?

Menti

...Yeah. I’m ready!

Sol

First, SINK the water with the PUSH block...

Sol

Then write SOL IS NOT FROG...

Sol

And now that we have that rule,
I can write SOL IS SAFE AND FROG...

Menti

There! You’re SAFE, but not a frog!

Menti

So finally, I can cross the water safely!

Sol

Sol...you did it!!

Zorro

...Thanks to all of you, of course.

Sol

Indeed, we work best as a team...
and you’re an important part of that, Sol.

Morel

Absolutely! I hope you don’t give up
here, Sol...the show must go on!

Olive

Yeah...how are you feeling now, Sol?
Do you want to keep going?

Menti

Everyone...I’ve made up my mind.

Sol

Let’s go see Lopi –
I have something to tell her.

Sol

Keep Going!

Part 5

...We made it. Lopi is waiting for
us straight ahead. Are you ready, Sol?

Menti

...I’m ready. Let’s go!

Sol

There you are.
So, have you made your decision?

Lopi

I have. Lopi, my answer to you is...

Sol

I won’t join the Keepers.

Sol

My friends and I – the Rewriters –
we won’t give up until we stop you!

Sol

Wh-what?! Didn’t you remember, Sol?
Your past self gave up already!

Lopi

Oh I remembered alright, thanks to you...
and I admit, it made me doubt myself.

Sol

“I’ve been acting brave all this time...
but is that really me?” Thoughts like that
kept bringing me down...

Sol

But then I realized something, when I...
well, when I turned into a frog!

Sol

When you– what?

Lopi

Yep, I accidentally became a frog while
solving a problem! And it reminded me...

Sol

When I first woke up in the caves, and
Luna was helping me escape...I was scared
to try anything at first.

Sol

But once I tried, once I made my first
mistake – I realized it wasn’t so bad.
It was fun to try, actually!

Sol

Then I met Zorro, Morel and Enoki, Olive, Menti...we all made mistakes on the way here, but we learned a lot, too.

Sol

So everything we’ve done up until now...
it’s not meaningless just because I was different in the past.

Sol

Sure, I was scared of making mistakes before...but I’ve changed. And that’s good!
I like that I’ve changed.

Sol

I can decide who I am going forward – not you.

Sol

And I decide to be a Rewriter! My friends
and I – together, we’ll bring change back
to this world.

Sol

...I see. How disappointing.

Lopi

Prepare yourselves, then. The Keepers will
be ready to stop you next time...for good.

Lopi

Sol...are you shaking?

Menti

Haha, yeah...guess I was
pretty scared, after all.

Sol

Heh...but you did it.
That’s what makes you brave.

Menti

Yeah! That was so cool, Sol!

Zorro

Agreed – and I’m so relieved
you’re staying with us!

Olive

...I’m proud of you, Sol.
You’ve grown so much since we first met.

Morel

After accepting their past mistakes, Sol stood up
to Lopi and decided to keep rewriting!

What's a mistake you've made that you learned from?

Let's Discuss:

Alright everyone – the Keepers’ station
is just up ahead! Let’s do this!

Sol

Lead the way, Sol!

Menti

...So Luna is the one who helped Sol escape.
I don’t know how, but that’s what they said!

Lopi

How interesting...
I suppose we have no choice, then.

???

We’ll show those Rewriters...they’re not
the only ones who can work in a team.

???

Until next time...
