"Who was that mysterious knight?"
Episode 2 ・ Null Point

Get Ready!
Part 1

Last time on
The Rewriters!

Sol dreamt of a strange world...
Luna

...full of rules and wonder...
Luna

They journeyed on until...
Luna

Sol awoke in an unfamiliar dark cave!
Luna

This seemed to alarm a mysterious knight
who ran off in a hurry.
Luna

Our story continues...

Oof...I'm awake now, right?
Sol

Who was that knight?
Sol

...And where am I?
Sol

You're in Null Point — a faraway cave,
high up in the mountains.
Luna

AH! Luna, where'd you come from?!
I thought you were just part of my dream!
Sol

That's usually the case, yes. I was able
to follow you here using my powers...
Luna

...but I can't stay for long. I'll have to
leave and rest for a while after this.
Luna

Really...? But I still don't
remember anything about myself...
what will I do after you leave?
Sol

Don't worry, Sol...I think there's a
solution to your lost memories. Remember
the teddy bear you found earlier?
Luna

Oh yeah...I heard a voice when
I held that bear. It seemed familiar.
Sol

Exactly. I believe there are
other objects in this world that will help
you unlock memories of your past.
Luna

...And I'm sensing an object like that at
the exit of this cave. Sol, you must find it by—
Luna

BOOM! CRASH!

Woah! Luna, what was that noise
just now?!
Sol

How can this be...?
Sol, the exit is caving in!
Luna

W-what?! What should I do??
We need to get out of here!
Sol

Hmmm...first, let's stay calm.
We still have time, just less than I thought.
Luna

You can do this, Sol — escape the cave
by using your rewriting power!
Luna

How can I do that...?
Sol

Look around you...doesn't some of this
seem familiar?
Luna

...Oh, you're right! It looks a little different, but there are objects, blocks,
and rules here like the ones in my dream.
Sol

Indeed. This cave has objects
like rocks, mushrooms, and fossils.
Luna

As for object blocks — there's a block
for mushrooms, Sol, fossils, and gold.
Luna

Yeah! There's also the connector block...
Sol

And a state block. Hmm, this one says SINK.
I don't think I know that one.
Sol

Can you tell me what it means, Luna?
Sol

Hm...remember Sol, I won't always
be here to give you the answer.
Luna

Instead, I can show you how to approach
problems that are new or unfamiliar.
That should be more useful for you.
Luna

After all, the first step to solving
a problem is to understand it.
Luna

And the more you understand a
problem, the more your rewriting
power grows when you WIN.
Luna

Really? Okay then, I'll try...
but where do I start?
Sol

Let's try this — make new rules with the SINK block by using these 3 object blocks.
Luna

...New rules? So I should try
making SOL IS SINK, FOSSIL IS SINK,
and GOLD IS SINK?
Sol

Yes. Each time you make a new rule, pause
and notice what happens. That should help you understand SINK and solve this problem.
Luna

But remember, it's okay if you don't solve
the problem right away. What's important is
that you try to understand it first.
Luna

Right...I just need to try my best.
Let's do this!
Sol

Part 3

Time for a Video!

Let’s make sure volume is turned up and everyone can see before going to the next slide.

Good work trying this problem
by yourself, Sol.
Luna

But I haven't even solved it yet...
Sol

That's fine! Remember, understanding
a problem is only the first step.
Luna

What are the other steps?
Sol

Here...I wrote them on this scroll
for you. These are the 4 steps I use
to solve problems.
Luna

Problem-Solving Steps

- Understand the problem
- Plan a solution
- Try the solution
- Reflect on the solution
For now, let's only focus on the
first step: understanding the problem.
Luna

Right. How can I understand blocks
and rules I've never seen before?
Sol

You’ve actually already started
doing it...by using a powerful strategy
called tinkering.
Luna

Tinkering? What's that?
Sol

Tinkering is like experimenting – you try something new, then pause to notice and understand what happened.
Luna

Try something new...? Is that why
you told me to try making new rules
with the SINK block?
Sol

Yes, that's an example of tinkering.
There are many ways we can tinker
in this world.
Luna

For example, right now the
MUSHROOM IS SINK. Sol, what would you do
to learn more about how that rule works?
Luna

Hmm...my first idea is to go
touch the mushrooms and see what happens.
Sol

That’s a great idea. Touching an object
to see what happens is one way to tinker.
Why don’t you try it?
Luna

Okay...I’m kind of scared it’ll
be a mistake though.
Sol

That’s understandable, but remember
that mistakes help us learn new things.
Luna

Also, don’t forget you can undo and
start over as many times as you need.
Luna

Oh, that’s true. Alright, here I go...!
Sol

Waaaahh!!
Sol

Okay, let's undo.
Luna

Are you alright, Sol?
Luna

OMG...that was scary, but also kind
of fun? I didn’t know you could sink
in mushrooms like that...
Sol

Aha, now this is the important part of
tinkering – after you try something,
pause and think about what happened.
Luna

So let me ask you, Sol:
What did you notice after trying that?
Luna

Hmm...I noticed that walking on
the mushrooms made me disappear.
But that’s not all...
Sol

The mushroom that I walked on
also disappeared! Is that how SINK works?
Sol

Good observations!
Let's keep tinkering to learn more.
Luna

Knowing what happened in your first
experiment, what do you want to try next?
Luna

I'd rather not sink again, so...
maybe I could try pushing these fossils
into the mushrooms instead?
Sol

Pushing objects together to see what
happens is another way to tinker.
Go ahead and try it.
Luna

Now that you've tried that,
let's pause and think once more.
Luna

What did you notice when Sol pushed the fossils into the mushrooms?
Let's Discuss! (2 mins)
Time for a Video!

Let’s make sure volume is turned up and everyone can see before going to the next slide.

I noticed that pushing a fossil onto a mushroom made both objects disappear. That helped clear a path through the mushrooms!
Sol

Very good. Let's move on to
what I had you try earlier...
Luna

You made 3 new rules with these
object blocks and the SINK block, right?
Luna

Yeah! After each rule,
I noticed something different.
Sol

Good, that's a key way to tinker –
make or break a rule, then notice
what happens to the object.
Luna

What did you notice
when you wrote SOL IS SINK?
Luna

After making SOL IS SINK,
nothing happened right away...
Sol

But when I tried walking on the water,
both the water and I disappeared!
Sol

I do need to get rid of the water
since WATER IS DEFEAT...but it's not helpful
if I sink too!
Sol

So I broke the SOL IS SINK rule
and tried writing a new rule!
Sol

Good thinking. Next you tried GOLD IS SINK,
yes? What did you notice then?
Luna

When I wrote GOLD IS SINK, I noticed
something right away – the 3 golds and the
water they were on all disappeared!
Sol

That cleared most of the path to the heart – so the GOLD IS SINK rule is definitely helpful!
Sol

Indeed. Finally, what did you notice
after writing FOSSIL IS SINK?
Luna

With FOSSIL IS SINK, I noticed something
similar – the 2 fossils and the water they
were on disappeared.
Sol

The fossil that's not on the water is still there, though...oh, wait! This can help me solve the problem!
Sol

Since FOSSIL IS PUSH, I can push it onto the
water. And since FOSSIL IS SINK, it'll make both objects disappear!
Sol

Now I have a clear path to the heart!
Sol

Yesss, I reached the WIN object! I can
feel my rewriting power growing stronger!
Sol

Excellent tinkering, Sol. You were brave
and tried different things...
Luna

...touching objects, pushing objects
together, making and breaking rules.
Luna

By tinkering, you learned what SINK
does...all on your own.
Luna

Oh yeah, you’re right!
Thanks for guiding me through this, Luna.
Sol

Of course! Now, let’s keep moving – there's
only so much time before the exit caves in.

Luna

You may see 2 new state blocks as you
continue your escape – BOOM and WEAK.

Luna

I’ll just tinker to learn
how they work, then!
Sol

I trust that you will, Sol.
Let's begin!
Luna

Keep Going!
Part 4

Tinker to understand how BOOM and WEAK work!
- Touch and push objects

Keep this in mind as you play...

- Use blocks to make and break rules
- Ask, “What do I notice?" after trying something
- Pause to read rules
with the Inspector

Check In!
Part 5

Phew, I barely made it out of those
caves in time!
Sol

I’m glad you’re safe, Sol. I know you were scared at first, but you did a great job tinkering to understand each problem.
Luna

Sadly, I have to leave soon...but before
I go, I want to make sure you understand the BOOM and WEAK state blocks.
Luna

...Alright, I'll show you what I learned!
Sol

All the fossils are disappearing at once, whether they’re on the water or not. So the fossils must be BOOM!
Sol

Correct. Making an object BOOM instantly destroys the object, along with any other objects on the same space as it.
Luna

You’ve done well, Sol.
Your rewriting power has grown...
Luna

Can you sense it? The object that will
unlock another memory...it’s nearby.
Luna

Hmm...yeah. It’s faint, but I can feel
myself drawn to it.
Sol

...This must be it! I hope this works...
I want to know who I am, or how I got here. Anything, really!
Sol

Carefully taking the diamond, Sol hears a sinister voice...

What will happen when you
are no longer YOU, Sol? Have a good,
long sleep to think about it...
???

Ah! It happened again!
This one had a different voice though...
Sol

And what did they even mean by that?
How can I not be “me”...?
Sol

Well, that’s sort of what’s happening
right now...I don’t know who I am.
Who is “Sol” supposed to be?
Sol

...Hold on, did someone do this to me
on purpose? And if they did...why?
Sol

I still have so many questions...
do you really have to leave, Luna?
Sol

I’m sorry, Sol. But I know you can do
this – discover the truth.
Luna

Travel this world and talk to others
along the way. Practice rewriting and
keep growing your power...
Luna

If you do, I believe that you’ll find all
your memories again.
Luna

It looks like I’m out of time here...
Luna

...But we’ll see each other again.
I believe in you, Sol.
Luna

Thank you for everything, Luna...
Sol

Okay...I can do this. I’ll try new
things and see what happens, just like
Luna taught me!
Sol

...And maybe I’ll make some
new friends along the way!
Sol

First things first though, I need
to get down this mountain...hm?
Sol

Are those...footprints in the snow?
Sol

Could they be from the knight
I saw earlier...?
Sol

There's only one way to find out.
Sol

Until next time...
