the Beach"

Episode 6 ・ Crabby Sands

Get Ready!

Part 1

Last time on

The Rewriters!

After Sol was accidentally separated from
the rest of the group, Morel and Zorro met Olive, a fearless fish!

Luna

They learned to plan solutions by breaking problems down into smaller steps — this led Morel, Enoki, and Olive to become Rewriters!

Luna

Soon after, the team reunited with Sol!

Luna

Back together, Olive shared rumors she’s
heard about “the Keepers” – the group behind
the disappearance of rewriting...

Luna

Among the Keepers is a powerful Rewriter — a knight! The team sets out to find this knight using Olive’s shell.

Luna

Taking the shell, Sol unlocked a
memory – someone who was upset with them for acting without thinking.

Luna

Who was that voice? Will Sol find out more
as the team begins their search for the mysterious knight...?

Luna

Our story continues...

Here we are, the beautiful beach of
Crabby Sands! Sol, which way is the shell pointing?

Olive

This way! Can this shell really lead
us straight to that knight?

Sol

Not exactly – it will lead us in the right direction, but we’ll have to investigate a bit more from there.

Olive

Let’s keep moving then!

Sol

Woah! The shell started spinning...!

Sol

GASP! The knight must be close by!

Olive

I'll ask someone around here if they've seen anything! Be right back~

Olive

Excuse me, have you seen a knight pass
through lately? About this tall, has a mysterious energy?

Olive

I see, I see...That’s helpful, thank you!

Olive

They were seen going this way just
a few moments ago! Let’s hurry!

Olive

I see a figure up ahead! Is that...?!

Zorro

The knight?!

Sol

Hey, wait up!

Sol

Woah?!

Sol

Oh my frog! The knight just turned into that...shrub?? This must be the rumored transformation power!

Olive

Wha-?

Zorro

...They're getting away!

Morel

Quick, let’s go follow them!!

Olive

Hold on, Olive – which way shall we go?
When they shuffled, I lost track of who
was who...

Morel

...Oh, I have an idea! Let’s split up into
pairs and check both ways at once!

Zorro

Great idea! Zorro, you and Morel take the
left path. Olive and I will go right.

Sol

That’s good with me! Ready?

Olive

Break!

Sol

Let's go, Olive!

Sol

Look, a small trail of leaves!
I bet that will lead us to the shrub!

Sol

...Olive?

Sol

Wow, look at this beautiful starfish! Ahh,
it’s been so long since I’ve been on land~

Olive

Umm, we should probably get going...

Sol

...Hm? Oh yes, the leaves!
Let’s follow them, Sol!

Olive

...Right!

Sol

She seems a bit distracted...are the
two of us going to be okay?

Sol (Thinking)

Hmm, the leaves stop here – we’ll
have to solve this problem to continue.

Sol

Looks like our goal is to reach
the heart since HEART IS WIN...
but where's the heart??

Olive

Hmm...let's break this down. There's the chamber we're in now, and another chamber on the right...

Sol

Oh! The right chamber has a HEART block
in it. Maybe we can use that somehow.

Sol

But we can't reach it because we're blocked
by this ball, which is DEFEAT! How tragic!

Olive

Yeah...the only things we can use in this chamber are the clam and these object blocks. How could these help us?

Sol

...I have an idea! With these blocks on
the left, we can write a rule for both the
clam and starfish...

Olive

What if we use the object blocks to write a transformation, like the knight just did?!

Olive

Oh, great idea! First, we should—

Sol

First, we should write CLAM IS CRAB!
Wait, no — CLAM IS STARFISH! Or maybe STARFISH IS CRAB??

Olive

Um, Olive? I think the order of steps
will be important here, so let's take our
time figuring it out.

Sol

Part 3

Time for a Video!

Let’s make sure volume is turned up and everyone can see before going to the next slide.

There's no starfish here, so I don't
think writing STARFISH IS CRAB would help
us right now.

Sol

In that case, we should write a rule for the clam. But first, we should—

Sol

I know! I'll write CLAM IS CRAB!

Olive

Yes, it worked!!

Olive

So to write a transformation, all you need
to do is connect two object blocks with an
IS block!

Olive

Now I'll just—

Olive

Wait, huh?? I can't push it!

Olive

Hmph. As I was trying to say...

Sol

First, we should pause and make a plan to
get past the ball. Let's reset the problem
to look at everything again.

Sol

Problem-Solving Steps

  1. Understand the problem
  2. Plan a solution
  3. Try the solution
  4. Reflect on the solution

Ahaha...I got ahead of myself, huh?
Sorry, sorry! I'll slow down, promise!

Olive

...Will she really?

Sol (Thinking)

...Okay, so thinking about
the steps we need to take...

Sol

I do think we need the crab at some
point — since the CRAB IS HOT, it can
destroy the ball, which is MELT.

Sol

But as we just saw, the crab can't destroy
the ball from over here. We'll need to push
it onto the ball somehow.

Sol

We don't have the blocks here to write
CRAB IS PUSH, so that's not an option...

Sol

The starfish is PUSH, though! So I think
the only way we can push this object is if
we turn it into a starfish.

Sol

Sol

Problem-Solving Steps

So the question is...what order should
we do these steps in? If we can answer
that, we'll have our plan.

2. Plan a solution

  • How can I break this problem into smaller steps?
  • What order should I do these steps in?

Okay, let me think! Instead of
transforming the clam into a crab first...

Olive

We should transform the clam into a starfish first! Then we'll be able to push it.

Olive

...That makes sense. So first, we write
CLAM IS STARFISH. Then, we push the starfish onto the ball. Then finally...

Sol

We write STARFISH IS CRAB! The starfish
should transform into a crab and destroy
the ball.

Sol

Okay, that plan sounds good to me!
Can we try it now?

Olive

Yes, now we can try it. I'll start
by writing CLAM IS STARFISH...

Sol

Great! The clam turned into a
starfish, so now we can push it.

Sol

Now it's my turn! I'll push the
starfish onto the ball, like so!

Olive

Oh, how I wish I could keep that starfish
for myself! But we need to transform it into
a crab...

Olive

So I'll write STARFISH IS CRAB!

Olive

Amazing! It turned into a crab and
melted the ball, just as we planned!

Olive

Now we can enter the next chamber,
where the HEART block is...

Sol

But how exactly can we use
this to reach the heart?

Sol

Well, we also have a CRAB block and
an IS block. There's only one idea
I can think of...

Olive

...OH! We can write a transformation!

Sol

Bingo! As long as we have two objects
blocks and an IS block, we can transform
one object into another!

Olive

Since HEART IS WIN, let's transform
this crab into a heart by writing...

Olive

...By writing HEART IS CRAB!

Sol

Yeah! Wait, no...shouldn't
it be CRAB IS HEART?

Olive

Huh? No, I think it's the other
way around, but...let me think again.

Sol

Which rule would transform
the crab into a heart?

HEART IS CRAB

Time for a Video!

Let’s make sure volume is turned up and everyone can see before going to the next slide.

...Oh wait, you're right. Making
HEART IS CRAB didn't do anything.

Sol

The first object in the rule transforms
into the second object — so we should write
CRAB IS HEART instead.

Sol

Here we go...

Sol

The crab just transformed into a heart!
Bravo!

Olive

And finally, we've reached the WIN!
Amazing work, Sol~

Olive

She's the amazing one...how did she learn rewriting so fast?? It's not fair...

Sol (Thinking)

Um, Olive? Sorry...I was wrong that time.

Sol

Hm? Sol, that’s nothing you need
to apologize for! I’ve been wrong
lots of times!

Olive

If anything, I should apologize to you –
I know I should pause and plan more, like
you said. Sorry about that...

Olive

I suppose this is why we’re working together, after all – to help each other learn!

Olive

Now, let’s keep looking for that
shrub...oh look, I see another starfish!
I simply must have it!

Olive

...Aaaand she’s off again.

Sol

She’s right, though...we all make mistakes, that’s how we learn. I know that, so why am
I still so frustrated?

Sol

Maybe if I was as confident as Olive, I...

Sol

...No, nevermind. I’d better go after her.

Sol

Olive, wait up!!

Sol

Keep Going!

Part 4

Keep this in mind as you play...

  • What order should I do these steps in?

Once you understand a problem,

Check In!

Part 5

Look, Sol! The trail of leaves we’ve
been following stops here and turns
into footprints!

Olive

You’re right! They look new, too –
we must be close to the knight!

Sol

I’ll go get Zorro and Morel – be right back!

Olive

Thanks! I'll keep going!

Sol

I see the knight up ahead...!

Sol

And here I am with the rest of the team,
just in time!

Olive

Finally...we caught up to you...!

Sol

...Ack! Ahem, I mean...

Knight

You think you’ve caught me? We’ll see
about that, Sol. As well as Olive. Zorro.
Morel and Enoki.

Knight

Zorro

You...know our names?

Of course. The Keepers see everything –
and your group has committed a serious breach
of the rules.

Knight

The rules were written this way for a
reason – to keep order. Change is
unpredictable, and leads to downfall.

Knight

That’s why rewriting had to be banished.

Knight

How can you believe all that...?
Aren’t you a Rewriter?

Sol

Haven’t you felt the satisfaction of walking through walls, or breaking down obstacles?

Sol

Or the fun of transforming objects?
Or even just...the fun of working with your friends to solve problems?

Sol

...I have no need for such distractions.
And no room for failure.

Knight

I don’t know your situation, but...
it’s okay to fail. I’ve failed a lot during
my journey so far...

Sol

But that’s how I got here! If I was too
afraid to fail, I’d probably still be stuck
in that cave.

Sol

...Of course, I have my friends to thank
for helping me get this far, too.

Sol

...Hah. The Keepers would see
your ‘friends’ as a weakness.

Knight

What do you mean...? If that’s the case,
why are you even working for the Keepers?

Sol

...Why don’t you join us, instead?

Sol

...After all you've been through,
Sol...how are you still like this?

Knight

Making friends wherever you go.
Never giving up, even when the odds are
stacked against you...

Knight

But I'm not you.

Knight

Wait...did you know me from before...?
What’s your name?

Sol

...I suppose you wouldn’t remember after
what we did to you. It’s Menti.

Menti

Now if we’re done here, I’ll be going.
The Keepers await my updated report.

Menti

Sol...enjoy your journey while you still can.

Menti

Wait, Menti!

Sol

...They’re gone, again.

Sol

Sol...we’re here for you!

Zorro

Indeed...if you want to go after
Menti again, we’ll gladly join you.

Morel

Hmm...I think I want to?
But...can I really change Menti’s mind?

Sol

Yes, we can!

Olive

Actually, I have something for all of you.
This may not be the best timing, but...

Olive

Here, I made one of these for
each of us...it’s a friendship charm!

Olive

Wow!! Thanks, Olive!

Zorro

Yes, thank you!

Morel

goo!

Enoki

...Olive, is this why you've been collecting starfish this whole time?

Sol

Sure is!

Olive

Olive...I’m sorry! This whole time I was
getting frustrated with you because I thought
you were distracted...

Sol

Sol

But really, that was never it.
To be honest...I think I was just a
little jealous of you.

Sol

You’re so confident, and you think of solutions so quickly...meanwhile, I’m still not sure who I am, or who I was.

Olive

Hmm...it’s true that I’m quick on my feet,
and love being the center of attention...

Olive

But you, Sol?  You’re kind, and you never
give up, even when you’re scared. You’re the
one who brings us together.

Olive

We might not be exactly the same, but...that difference is what makes us such a great team!

Olive

So please, Sol...accept this gift
and be proud of who you are!

Sol

Olive...thank you.
For this, and for everything.

With their similarities and differences, Sol and Olive learned how to work together and solve difficult problems!

Let's Discuss! (2 mins)

How are Sol and Olive alike? How are they different?

Sol

But seriously, when did you even
make these charms? I mean—

Sol

Hm? This is...

Accepting the friendship charm from Olive,
Sol hears a familiar voice...

???

Are you ok, Sol? ...No, I was at fault too...
I’m sorry. Look, no matter what happens...
we’ll always be friends.

Sol (Thinking)

That voice...! It was the same as the
last memory I heard!

Sol (Thinking)

So whoever I was arguing with before...
we must have made up somehow.

Sol (Thinking)

Haha...I guess I’ve always relied on
my friends, huh?

Zorro

Sol? Did you remember something
funny this time?

Sol

No, it’s just...I’m glad we all met.

Sol

Everyone...I’ve made up my mind. Let’s
settle things with Menti, once and for all.

Olive

We’re with you, Sol – we’ll prove that change isn’t as scary as the Keepers think it is.

Olive

And just in case Menti decides to join us...
I’ve got an extra charm right here!

Sol

Thanks, everyone. Now, let's go show
Menti the power of rewriting!

Until next time...
