"I Challenge You!"

Episode 7 ・ Willowbrook

Get Ready!

Part 1

Last time on

The Rewriters!

After splitting up to search Crabby Sands for
the mysterious knight, Sol and friends finally tracked down the transforming Rewriter!

Luna

The knight, named Menti, seemed to know Sol
quite well...still, they refused to join the Rewriters and slipped away.

Luna

Sol and Olive, who had conflict during
their search, learned to work as a team and strengthened their friendship.

Luna

Luna

Olive gifted friendship charms to each
Rewriter, unlocking a memory for Sol – one
of making up with a past friend.

Luna

Now determined to show Menti the power of rewriting, the team moves to settle things
with the knight once and for all...

Our story continues...

I think I saw Menti enter that town
just now! Let’s hurry!

Sol

Oh my, I’ve heard about this place –
the lively town of Willowbrook!

Olive

It’s the heart of the area, so
Menti’s sure to rest here a bit before continuing on to the Keepers.

Olive

Uh, speaking of Menti – look over there!!

Zorro

Menti! Wait up!

Sol

You...you even followed me here?!
After all the things I said to you? Why...?

Menti

Because! You’re the only one I’ve met
who knows the past me...I can’t let that
slip away!

Sol

Plus...I don’t think you really believe
what the Keepers believe – that change is bad and that rewriting should be banished.

Sol

...Hmph. So what, then?

Menti

So...I challenge you! To a duel!
A, uh...a rewriting duel!

Sol

If we win, you’ll leave the Keepers and
join us to spread the power of rewriting.

Sol

Heh...interesting. Then if I win, you’ll
stop rewriting and join the Keepers.

Menti

...I, uhh...!

Sol

We've got your back, Sol!

Zorro

Ho ho...with us on your side...

Morel

We'll win for sure!

Olive

...Right! Menti, I accept your conditions –
I believe in myself, and in my friends!

Sol

Fine, you’re on. I’m heading to the town center...if you can catch up to me there,
I’ll duel you.

Menti

...Did you all see that? How did Menti cross over the grass when GRASS IS DEFEAT??

Zorro

Intriguing...could it have something
to do with that state block...SAFE?

Morel

The rule says MENTI IS SAFE...so maybe when
an object is SAFE, it can’t be destroyed?

Olive

Maybe. Since we're not SAFE, I doubt we'll be able to cross this grass. We'll have to find another way to the town center...

Sol

Everyone, follow me!

Sol

Sol

Alright, we need to solve
this problem to continue!

Let's see...our goal is to reach
the heart since HEART IS WIN!

Zorro

Yes...but we're currently blocked by
the grass, which is DEFEAT AND SHUT.

Morel

Hm...there's also a box here, and a rule
that says BOX IS PUSH AND OPEN...

Sol

Oh, I have a plan! Since OPEN and SHUT
objects destroy each other when they touch, let's push the OPEN box into the SHUT grass!

Olive

The grass will be destroyed,
and we can move on to the next part
of the problem!

Olive

Hmm...go ahead and try that plan, Olive.

Morel

On it!

Olive

...Oops! Looks like my plan didn't work —
we're still blocked by the grass!

Olive

Indeed, we'll need to revise our plan. In other words, let's look at the plan again and try to improve it using what we learned.

Morel

As for how we should revise it...that's something we'll need to figure out together.

Morel

Explore!

Part 3

Time for a Video!

Let’s make sure volume is turned up and everyone can see before going to the next slide.

Seeing Olive try this problem
made me realize...

Sol

Problem-Solving Steps

After planning a solution, you did the third step — trying the solution. Which means...

Sol

  1. Understand the problem
  2. Plan a solution
  3. Try the solution
  4. Reflect on the solution

Problem-Solving Steps

We should do the fourth step now —
reflect on the solution!

Sol

  1. Understand the problem
  2. Plan a solution
  3. Try the solution
  4. Reflect on the solution

Problem-Solving Steps

I agree. By reflecting on our solutions,
we can learn from both our mistakes and
our successes.

Morel

In this case, our plan failed. So let's
start reflecting by asking ourselves:
Why didn't the plan work?

Morel

It didn't work because the box got destroyed along with the first patch of grass...

Olive

So we still had some grass blocking us,
and nothing to destroy it with!

Olive

Indeed. Now, how should we revise our plan?

Morel

Hmm...there must be a way to get rid of the next patch of grass. Maybe we don't have a full understanding of the problem...

Zorro

...Zorro, that's it! To help us
reflect, let's jump back to step 1: understand the problem!

Sol

  1. Understand the problem
  2. Plan a solution
  3. Try the solution
  4. Reflect on the solution

Problem-Solving Steps

Go back to step 1...? Is that allowed??

Zorro

Well, yeah! I mean, problems usually
aren’t solved on the first try, right?

Sol

Right. We can go through these steps
as many times as we need.

Morel

Okie dokie! Let’s reset so we can
understand this problem better!

Olive

Hmm, what else could be useful here...?

Sol

Oh! There’s a SAFE block here that
we didn’t use in the first plan – maybe
that could help?

Sol

Good catch, Sol! From what we saw earlier,
the SAFE block prevents an object from
being destroyed...

Olive

...Aha! We can revise our plan
by writing BOX IS SAFE before pushing
it into the grass!

Olive

...I see! If the box is SAFE, we can
use it to destroy both patches of grass!

Zorro

Bingo! I’ll try it right now~

Olive

Sol

Woah, it's working! The box isn't being destroyed! Now we can-

Uh, whoops! I think I just blocked
our path with the box!

Olive

Oh ho ho...we improved our plan,
but we’ll need to revise it once more.

Morel

Hm...if I could just push the box
one more space, it would have worked...

Olive

...That’s it! Olive, just undo and push
the box down this row – see the extra patch
of grass there?

Sol

Great idea, Sol! Let’s try it again!

Olive

Tada! Now onto the next part of the problem!

Olive

Reflecting on our solutions was
really helpful...let's add those
new questions to our scroll!

Zorro

Problem-Solving Steps

4. Reflect on the solution

  • Did the plan work? Why or why not?
  • How should I revise my plan if it didn't work?

3. Try the solution

Good idea, Zorro! Now, let’s finish this problem. We got past the grass, now we’re blocked by...

Sol

Zorro

We’re blocked by the water, since
it’s SINK. It’s also SAFE, so we can’t
destroy it.

Morel

Hmm...if we can’t destroy the water, there
must be another way to get past it.

Oooh, what if we try using this new state block? The one that says GO, with the arrow pointing right!

Olive

Oh yeah...maybe if we make the rule
WATER IS GO RIGHT, the water will move
somehow? That might help us!

Sol

Hm...nothing happened...maybe—

Sol

WOAH! D-did the rest of you just see that??
The water moved one step to the right!

Zorro

Yes, I saw that.
Sol, try moving one step again.

Morel

Oh my frog, I saw it too!
Sol, do it again!

Olive

I see...every time Sol moves one
step, the object that's GO also moves one
step in the direction of the arrow.

Morel

Sol

Yeah...that gives me an idea for a plan!
If I move a couple more steps, the water
should move past the heart...

Sol

Then we’ll be able to reach the WIN!
Let me try it-

Oops. Looks like we have to reflect again!

Sol

Let’s go to our questions!
First, why didn’t that plan work?

Zorro

Sol

Well, I forgot that WATER IS SINK...
so the heart got destroyed when the water
moved over it.

Zorro

Now, how should we revise our plan...? Let’s
undo a bit and look at the problem again.
Maybe we missed something!

...Oh! I notice there’s object blocks for
HEART and CHICKEN. There's an IS block, too.

Sol

Sol

There aren’t any chickens here, but there
is a rule that says CHICKEN IS SAFE...

Sol

Would any of this be useful for revising
our plan? Let's think about it...

Let's Discuss! (2 mins)

How should the Rewriters revise their plan?

Time for a Video!

Let’s make sure volume is turned up and everyone can see before going to the next slide.

I wonder why the chicken is SAFE...
it would be great if we could make the
heart SAFE instead!

Olive

...Wait. I think we can! Well, sort of –
we can’t write HEART IS SAFE, but we can
write HEART IS CHICKEN.

Sol

But...won’t that just transform
the heart into a chicken?

Zorro

Yep – but remember, CHICKEN IS SAFE.
That means we can make the water GO RIGHT,
and it won't SINK the chicken!

Sol

Oh...that makes sense!
So once the water is past the chicken...

Zorro

We can transform it back into a heart
by writing CHICKEN IS HEART!

Sol

Sounds like a plan!
Shall we try it out?

Olive

Yep, here I go!

Sol

Sol

First, write HEART IS CHICKEN...

Sol

Next, make WATER IS GO RIGHT...

Sol

Now walk a few steps so the water
moves past the chicken...

And finally, write CHICKEN IS HEART!

Sol

It worked!! Now we can reach the heart!

Zorro

Ahhh, I feel like my rewriting
power grew a lot from this~

Olive

Sol

Yeah, me too! By the way...

Sol

...Do you all feel ready to duel Menti?
I know I kind of dragged the rest of you
into this...

Hm...we may have less experience as
Rewriters compared to Menti, but I believe
we have two advantages on our side.

Morel

Morel

The first is what we practiced just
now – we’re willing to make mistakes
and learn from them.

Morel

The second is what we’ve been doing this
whole time...working as a team.

Sol

...That’s right. Menti’s been
working alone this whole time...

Sol

So we’ll win this duel,
and bring Menti to our side...!

Zorro

Agreed!

Olive

Absolutely!!

Enoki

goo!

Sol

Thanks, everyone — now, to the duel!

Keep Going!

Part 4

Keep this in mind as you play...

If you can’t think of anything
else to try, go back to step 1:
Understanding the problem!

After trying a solution,
reflect on it by asking yourself:

  • Did the plan work?
    Why or why not?
  • How should I revise my plan if it didn’t work?

Check In!

Part 5

...Yes! We win the duel, Menti —
we reached the WIN object first!

Sol

No...how could I let this happen...

Menti

Menti?!

Sol

This isn’t fair...you have your friends
helping you and I’m just...alone.

Menti

But we can change that now, Menti...
here, let me help you back up.

Sol

Hm? Your toy horse fell over,
I’ll get that for you...

Sol

Wait. This feeling...?!

Sol (Thinking)

Picking up Menti’s toy horse, Sol hears
the voices of two young children...

Sol, wait up!!

???

Hahaha, catch me if you can Menti!
Let’s race to our secret hideout!

Sol (Memory)

...Wait...that voice from the previous memories...does this mean...?!?!

Sol

Here you go, Sol! ...I know, this is my
favorite toy, but...I want you to have it.
I have the most fun with you, after all!

???

Sol, watch out! ...That was close, you almost
hurt yourself. Wait, why did you run off in this direction again?? Ugh, I think we’re lost...

???

Menti

Are you ok, Sol? ...No, I was at fault too...
I’m sorry. Look, no matter what happens...
we’ll always be friends.

My childhood friend from before all this...Menti, that was you?!?!

Sol

Heh...you finally remembered, huh?

Menti

Do you recognize me, Sol?

Menti

I...I do! Menti...we lived next door to
each other, right here in Willowbrook!

Sol

We used to play together! We’d go on
adventures! We...were best friends...

Sol

So...why? What happened? How did you
end up working with the Keepers?

Sol

...It’s hard to explain, but...you won the
duel, fair and square. So I’ll do my best.

Menti

Sol...back then, you were a bit...
impulsive. You were always running around, rewriting without a care in the world.

Menti

I was?? I guess there’s still
a lot I don’t remember...

Sol

Yeah. That got us into some...
tricky situations, let’s say...

Menti

Really?? Like what?

Sol

...The details aren’t important.

Menti

The point is...while you were bravely
running into any problem you could find...
I was always scared.

Menti

Scared of making mistakes, and scared of
one or both of us getting hurt one day.

Menti

That’s why when the Keepers
approached me...I followed.

Menti

They promised me a world of everlasting
peace, where no one would get hurt.
Everything would be perfect, unchanging.

Menti

I didn’t discover their true plan
until much later...

Menti

They just wanted to use my power to trap everyone in difficult problems – to banish rewriting, once and for all.

Menti

...I realized then that I made a mistake,
but I didn’t know how to fix it.

Menti

I was afraid of leaving the Keepers –
of being more alone than I already was.

Menti

Sol, I...I wanted to protect you. But I
ended up hurting you, and hurting everyone.
I’m so sorry, Sol.

Menti

Menti...it’s not too late to fix things!

Sol

You made a mistake – but I’ve learned that
it’s important to reflect on mistakes and
figure out how to make things right.

Sol

Everything in this world is meant to
change and grow, after all...that applies
to you too, you know?

Sol

You can start changing right now — join
us to fight against the Keepers! Spread
the joy and power of rewriting to everyone!

Sol

...!

Menti

Sol, you...you’ve actually changed
a lot, haven’t you?

Menti

I have?

Sol

...Yeah. I’ll have to catch up to you, Sol – starting now, I’m going to fix my mistakes.

Menti

Let’s stand up to the Keepers and bring
rewriting back to this world...together!

Menti

Menti...! Yes!! Let’s do it!!

Sol

Um, sorry for eavesdropping, but...
we’re happy to have you on the team, Menti!

Zorro

Yes...I'm excited to learn from you as well.

Morel

The more, the merrier! Welcome, Menti~

Olive

By the way, Sol – don’t forget about
that thing I made for all of us!

Olive

...Oh, right! Menti, take this — a friendship charm to show you’re officially one of us!

Sol

...Thank you, everyone. Heh...I never thought
I’d be so happy to lose against you, Sol.

Menti

Let's Discuss! (2 mins)

What did Menti learn from her duel with Sol?

Alright team – let’s rest up before
we make our way to the Keepers!

Sol

Sounds good to me...we have a lot of
catching up to do, after all!

Menti

...We must report this to
the Headkeepers at once.

Shrubs

I see, I see...thank you for
the update, my shrubs.

???

So Menti is still protecting that
friend of hers...how foolish.

???

No matter – I’ll make Sol remember
everything, whether they like it or not.

???

Until next time...
